The Proposal
March 28, 2008
Some Background
So let me provide some background to fully understand the entire proposal. First off, on our first date (which Natalia asked me on) we went to a corn maze in Pleasant Grove called HeeHaw Farms. That night, we had a picture taken in what was called, “The Corn Box”, which was just this small little shed the size of closet filled with corn at the bottom.. (kinda lame, honestly) :) — But we had fun nonetheless.

Months later, Natalia went to Vegas with a roommate to go visit a friend down there, and while in the Coke store, she thought it’d be ‘cute’ to use an empty coke bottle as sort of a vase for a flower. (She brought this up a few more times along the way).
In November I was involved in a car accident that ended the life of my Celica (sad). So Natalia has been good enough to let me share her car with her. And she’s been giving me rides as well.
For those of you who don’t know, I’m studying Digital Media (Film) at UVU and this current semester I’m in a film production class where the whole thing is planning, shooting, and editing an 8 minute film. So I’ve been out filming with my group as of recently.
So on Wednesdays, I work from about 9 to about 3:30. Then class at 4; then usually Brent (who has class at the exact same time) gives me a ride home at about 5:20.
This particular Wednesday happened to be Spencer’s birthday, and EVERYONE was going to be going to his bday dinner at Chili’s that night. And since the ring was ready the Monday before, I figured this would be the PERFECT opportunity to strike.
The Set-Up
A week earlier, Brent & I (after school) went up to Pleasant Grove to HeeHaw Farms to scope out the place and since then I’d been formulating some sort of plan of action. Although it looked like HeeHaw was hit by a twister, I still decided to move forward.
With the ring ready, and everyone gathered at Chili’s Wednesday was the day. The night before I called her dad in Hawaii and had a very good conversation with him where he was able to give us his blessing before moving forward (which was scary! but he put me at ease)
Wednesday had arrived and I had the plan! I was going to tell Natalia that my group was filming some place up in Pleasant Grove. But before I had the chance to tell her, Natalia had let me know that she wasn’t going to be done with a school thing till about 7 (the dinner was at 7:30) so she told me to just get a ride and meet her there so we wouldn’t be late. I couldn’t let this happen ‘cause it would ruin the plans. So I insisted she needed to pick me up, because then I wouldn’t have a ride. So then she asked for an address. I knew that if she got the address, she’d look it up, and in Google Maps (satellite view) if she looked up the address it would show her the farm. And in the corn field the words “HEE HAW FARMS” were clearly visible and I didn’t want her to suspect anything till she got there. So I told her we were filming in some field (which wasn’t out of the ordinary given the movie we’re filming) and that I’d text her the directions.
So that was resolved. We were going to be a little late to dinner, but it was ok. She gave me a ride from work to school at 3:30 and she suspected nothing. After class Brent and I were able to locate some coke bottles at Wal-Mart (12 of them) and got 2 dozen roses from CostCo and headed out to HeeHaw Farms.
When we got there we formulated the rest of the plan. I was going to stick 12 of the 24 roses in a bail of hay right at the front gate of HeeHaw farms. We emptied the coke bottles, and stuck a rose in each of them. Unfortunatly it was windy and the kepy falling. So for some of them we poured water in them. We lined maybe 3 or 4 from the entrance all the way to “The Corn Box,” where I placed the rest of the roses in coke bottles in the shape of a heart. I then took the above Corn Box picture, and the original ticket (which I kept) from our first date and placed it visibly with the dozen roses at the entrance of the farm.

The Proposal
Natalia was on her way, and Brent left. So I was just left to my thoughts. There was a wreck on I-15 so it was going to take her an extra 10-15 minutes. I was going out of my mind just waiting.
So she pulls in to the front of the gate and is just sitting there for a few minutes until she notices the HeeHaw farms sign and the roses below. She knew what was up (as expected).
So she followed the coke-roses to the Corn Box. (I was around the corner) and when the time was right, I moved in. I got on (both) knees pretty much told her how I felt and asked her if she would be my wife and let me be her husband. So that was that.
We cleaned up the grounds (gathered all the flowers) and were on our way to chilis.

As we walked in about 20+ of our friends were there. I then said “Everyone! We have an announcement!” (some of them already knew, thanks for that one spencer!) I then put my arm around Natalia and she raised her hand. Everyone: “YOU”RE GETTING MARRIED!”
Stay tuned. there will be accompanying video clips.
Conversations Overheard Pt. 2
March 27, 2008
OMG. OK. So this is happening as I’m typing this. I’m sitting in school on my laptop just in the hallway. There is a table to my right with a guy & girl talking, and I was in the middle of writing another post… when this caught my ear’s attention:
Guy: “How do you guys pee?”
I suddenly look up from my laptop, eyes a little wider. What caught my attention was how he said it- in complete and utter seriousness & maturity.
Guy: “I mean can you guys aim it this way or that way?”
My eyes grow wider, not believing their talking about this so loudly in public and in complete earnestness. The girl says something a little less audible.
Guy: “Oh ok, so technically you guys can go in a urinal?”
Girl says something I can’t hear.
Guy: “Ok. ok… so does it have a lot of pressure? Does it come out slow?!”
OMG!
More inaudibleness… when i hear:
Girl: “Psshhhhhhhhh”
!!!!!
(Earlier as I was sitting here I heard… from another guy & girl sitting nearby…
Guy: “Come on.. Naked Guitar hero!! …
Girl: (annoyed)
Guy: “Topless Guitar Hero Topless Guitar Hero!!”
Girl: (annoyed)
Guy: “Fine! Just Guitar Hero”
The things I hear.
Conversations Overheard
March 25, 2008
So as I was walking out of my english class this afternoon I walked by two people in conversation.
Person 1: “What class are you waiting for?”
Person 2: “Just my Ethnics & Values class.”
Person 1: “You’re what?”
Person 2: (non-chalant) “Ethnics & Values…”
I continued walking not able to hear the rest of the conversation until I turn the corner and hear an uproar of laughter.
(The class was Ethics & Values… not Ethnics & Values).
The situation made me smile.
No comments feature?
March 17, 2008
I’ve received this response from a few people who read this blog, that there’s no comment feature in which to reply. Here is an exerpt from someone else’s blog about why Tumblr (the blog service I use) doesn’t have a comments feature
First of all, I am against comments on tumblr. Why? Because tumblr is a site for tumblelogs. The tumblelog is a beautifully simple medium. One of the wonders of the simplicity is the lack of a commenting system. And while you may really want comments on your tumblelog, let’s think of it like this:
So you’ve seen a mighty mouse. It’s a beautiful little device. It’s simple and has a minimal amount of buttons. That’s what makes the design so nice. Now you may want to have more buttons. How are you going to address this? I’d really hope you go buy a different mouse with that purpose in mind. Maybe a gaming mouse with ten different buttons. What I hope you don’t do is duct tape a new button to the side of your mighty mouse. That would defeat the purpose of owning a might mouse!
And that’s what I mean with the tumblelog. Why would you throw all kinds of extra crap onto a medium that exists for it’s simplicity? WordPress is free. Textpattern is free. Symphony is free. Livejournal is free. Blogger is free. There are so many other platforms to blog with. Why duct tape comments onto a tumblelog?
That being said, I want to point out that the reason I finally started a blog, was because I found a blog service that was easy, simple, and clean, while still allowing me the option to fully customize everything
I apologize that there’s no comment feature. If you really want to leave a comment, you can do so when this entry is imported into Facebook as a Note.
Have a good one!
PS – Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
Do I look Asian?
March 14, 2008
Quick story…
So Natalia & I happen to frequent the Chinatown Restaurant in South Provo (mainly for their awesome lunch special) and during our most recent visit the lady who was taking our order asked me…
“Where are your parents from?”
So, I was semi-puzzled and I think it showed, thinking to myself, “Why would this lady care about where my Central American parents are from …?”
I continued, “My parents are actually from Central America. I’m Hispanic.”
“Oh, I’m sorry. Your eyes and face make you look Asian. I’m sorry”
Funny thing is, this has happened several times before, randomly in my life. In examining my dad’s side of the family, I think that somewhere, I think I might have Japanese ancestry (MAYBE). My dad told me that they nicknamed my grandfather “El Japones” when he was in the Salvadorean military. Because ‘he looked’ Japanese. I don’t think its been confirmed as to whether or not I do have Japanese ancestry, but I wouldn’t be surprised.
Now I ask you, do I look Asian?
