retraction

As blogs are a public forum for expression of opinion, the editing board of the Such is Life blog does not make it a habit to censure its author very often. However, at this time we feel that it is necessary to issue a public apology to any readers who may have been offended by yesterday’s post. We assure our readers that said post was not meant to hurt anyone’s feelings. It was brought to our attention that even the blog’s author has had occasion to enjoy music being played on blogs. In fact, one of the author’s favorite songs last summer was a song she heard first on a blog. Please feel free to continue sharing your beloved music with the world. Thank you.
celine

So here I am sitting at the reference desk (I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve started blog posts with this phrase only to go back and delete it because I convinced myself that I used it for every post… but this time I refuse to buckle under the pressure that my brain is creating within itself to go back and change it). About 5 minutes ago, I started hearing something that sounded like singing. It was barely audible, but I have great hearing. As I listened more closely I realized that the song was being sung by none other than Celine Dion (I could tell because of the screaming). As I looked over at the public computers, I tried figuring out which Celine fanatic was listening to “All by Myself” so loudly that I could hear it from 20 feet away. I didn’t see anyone with headphones on. With vivid images in my head of Celine pumping her lungs full of oxygen by smacking her own chest, I realized that it wasn’t some hearing impaired student, it was me. The screeching singing happened to be coming through my earphones (which are not currently in my ears) thanks to a blog that I happened to be looking at.
laundry thief
February 24, 2009
Everyone always talks about how the dryer eats socks. I have always thought this was ridiculous… until it happened to me, well not me but sort of. So the last time I went to do my laundry, I put everything in the washer. 20 minutes later I switched them over to the dryer. Then I packed everything up and took it home. Once I got home I sat down to fold all of the laundry. After finishing all of the laundry, I found an extra sock that I suspected did not belong to us. How did I know this? Because it was a red sock (which neither of us own) and it looked like it belong to a 4-year-old (which neither of us are). I have no idea where this sock came from. So I now have a new theory about the dryer. The dryer is obviously has an eating disorder (this is evidenced by the fact that it binges on socks and then purges them into other people’s loads). I instead of getting mad when things turn up missing in our laundry, we need to have compassion towards the dryer. Maybe the dryer could use some time with a therapist. Who knows, maybe a trip to rehab would do some good.
too young to feel this old
February 23, 2009
My little sister turned 14 this weekend. And as Garth Brooks would say, “I’m much to young to feel this damn old.” I absolutely cannot believe that she is getting this old. In my head she will always be the 5-year-old little girl that would refuse to wear anything but dresses to kindergarten and we would have to bribe her to wear shorts under her dress on the days that she had P.E. For her birthday, she had a few friends over for a small party and then they went to watch Seussical. I love that she is growing up having some of the same interests that I have (i.e. loving to go see musicals and plays) and she looks more and more like me everyday. If I got a penny for every time that someone saw a picture of her and thought that it was me, I have amounted a small fortune by now. She is my favorite sister in the whole wide world. I was almost 12-years-old when she was born so she was my little baby and I loved taking care of her (except for the fact that she constantly cried). Since I lived at home during my undergrad, we always did everything together. In fact, she was probably better friends with my friends than I ever was (Karina can attest to the number of times Tina showed up on her bike without having told anyone at our house that she was leaving). I miss my Tina everyday and I wish that we lived closer to one another so that we could hang out together.

This is the number of attorneys that lost their jobs last Thursday. Now can you understand why I’m having a hard time finding a job?
My Grandma
February 22, 2009

For those of you who don’t know, our Grandma Clement passed away this past week. It wasn’t unexpected seeing as she’s been really sick in the hospital the last month, which gave us all the opportunity to say goodbye.
When my dad was (18 or 19, I don’t remember) he moved to Utah, and in order to learn English, he thought it would be good to retake a year or two of highschool. So Val and Grant Clement opened up their home to him. My dad would then end up living with the for 3 years during which he had started referring to them as Mom and Dad.
The contact between my dad and the Clements continued through my parents marriage, and through each of us being born. Growing up, I only ever knew them as “Grandma and Grandpa.” During the few times we visited Utah growing up, we stayed with them, and always spent time with them playing board games and card games. They travelled down to Texas for my baptism which was so much fun for them and us. Every holiday and birthday they would always (without fail) call us and send us something.
I was so happy that they were both able to be there when Natalia & I were married. Now having lost Grandma, we (my siblings & I) realize what a huge impact they have had in our lives, and we are so thankful. My parents came in this weekend for the funeral, which was yesterday. Needless to say, it was sad. But it was a nice opportunity for our family to bond a bit over the memory of our Grandma.
