happy birthday mãe

I love my mom. In fact, pretty much everyone who knows her loves her too. And you know why? Because she is sweet, and loving, and cute, and spunky, and I could go on and on. And if you didn’t already know, today is her birthday. We love you mãe, happy birthday!

holiday decor

Do you decorate your house for the holidays? My mom was one of those cute, crafty moms and she always had a bunch of cute decorations for the holidays. One of my favorites was a broom that had some candy decorations attached to the front. I  will always remember when she brought it home and we were so disappointed to find out the candy wrappers were empty (which means it really was for decorative purposes only).

I have very, very little in terms of holiday decor. But every once in a while, I get the craft bug and decide I want to make something. Yesterday was one of those days. So off I went to Hobby Lobby for tulle, wood letters, and glitter (I really appreciated that a random stranger gave me a 40% off coupon), and then the dollar store for candles and wreaths. I came home and spent the entire afternoon making a tutu-inspired wreath:

And candy corn candles:

You can’t see it well in the picture but I mod podged the bottom of the candle in yellow, the middle in orange, and the top in white. I was also going to put candy corn on the bottom of the vases, but our local Wal-Mart had NO CANDY CORN ANYWHERE.

nevada day

As you may recall, here in Nevada we have a little thing called Nevada day. A whole day off of work to “celebrate” the wonderful state of Nevada. But if you ask me, if I were a legislature I would make sure there was one state holiday each month. I know we’re pretty close to that as it is, but thing is, it only counts if it is a fake holiday that no one celebrates. You see, next month when we have the day off for Thanksgiving, everyone is too busy preparing food, decorating, and getting people together. Only holidays like Nevada day, Veteran’s day, etc. can you really use the day to relax, get caught up on assignments, run errands, and just take a breather.

birthday candles

Have you ever bought these number candles?

They’re not my favorites, but these were the candles Luis wanted to buy for my brother’s birthday cake. So we got them. Imagine my surprise when I realized the candles only have a tiny little stump on the bottom. I tried sticking the stumps into my brother’s cake, but there was no way they were staying in unless I had stuck half of the candle itself in the cake. So I came up with a solution. I stuck toothpicks in the bottom of the candles:

The toothpicks were inserted in the cake, and stayed in perfectly securely while we sang happy birthday. We even had to sign twice because we had to do it both in English and Portuguese :)

look who came to visit

My brother and his cute little family came to see us last weekend.

It just so happened to also be my brother’s birthday and we sure had a blast celebrating with them. First we went to see the Lion King on stage:

As you may recall, Luis and I had gone to see the Lion King last year with some friends, and we loved it just as much the second time around. It made it all that much more fun to see Hannah enjoying the show. Unfortunately, the show scared Lia to death. So much so that she got scared even looking at the show posters we saw around town afterward.

We had a lovely a dinner at Claim Jumper in celebration of my brother’s 29th birthday that night. And then to round out the celebration I made one of Flavio’s favorites the following day: yellow cake with fat-free/sugar-free chocolate pudding instead of frosting.

As you can tell, we were having much too much fun to be bothered with taking pictures of the events, and we sure were glad to have my brother’s whole family with us… even if it has taken over a week to get this post up :)  We love you guys!

Happy, Happy, Happy Birthday

October 25 is a very special day indeed. 3 of our family members were born today.

19 years ago, Eduardito entered the world. He is technically my first cousin, once removed (son to a first cousin). The following year, my family moved to Honduras and we were able to be close to him during his toddler stage. 10 years later, Eduardo moved in with my parents and me in Texas. Although we fought CONSTANTLY, we grew very close. I consider Eduardo to be the little brother I never had and always wanted. Happy Birthday Eduardo!

2 years ago, after nine exciting months, Ricardo & Maricela’s little one, Abel, was born. It was a day I will never forget. Me, my sister, Natalia, Maricela’s mom and sister, were all at the hospital, waiting anxiously to meet the newest member of our family. Happy Birthday Abel!

That very same day, unbeknown to us, a thousand miles away, another niece was born into our family. Little Lia soon became daughter to Flavio & Niki through the miracle of adoption. She’s now a sassy, giggly, inquisitive little toddler. Happy Birthday Lia!

sicky

Why no blogging for a week? I’ve been sick. The sore throat/coughing/body-aching/exhausting kind of sick. Luis has been the perfect nurse. He has been so loving and caring, making sure I feel ok throughout the day, making me honey-lemon tea every night, and trying to find different ways for the persistent cough to go away like boiling a pot of water and sitting under a towel with it to inhale the steam… (we can’t find our humidifier).

My friend/visiting teacher, Suzy, brought me a delicious black bean soup on Tuesday night. It tasted just like my mom’s beans and made me feel so warm and cozy.

I wish there were some way for illnesses of all types to be eradicated from the face of the earth. But since there isn’t (at least not yet), I’m grateful that I’ve been well cared for this week :)
