Day of Thanksgiving
November 30, 2010
Let it be known that I’ve been pestering Natalia for the last 3 days to work on this post together. Since that hasn’t happened, and December is TOMORROW, I decided to take things into my own hands. I present to you, Thanksgiving Day 2010:
We woke up (after slightly sleeping in) on Thursday morning at “La Maison Rojay” (aka, the Rogers house) in Provo, and had ourselves a little visitor. We were trying to figure out the plans for the day, which included all going to watch Harry Potter at some point that evening. Natalia will tell you she was busy doing *something* in the kitchen, but since she isn’t here, the post MUST go on.
After formulating a plan for the day, the cold weather prompted Natalia and Amy to run over to 7-11 and fetch us all some awesome hot chocolate. (If you recall, Natalia is in love with 7-11 hot cocoa.)
Later that afternoon, while Natalia and Diane were making final preparations for the big meal, Jared, Amy, and I played Egyptian Rat Screw… a card game staple during my high school years. I believe I won.
Dinner time!! Woot!! As pictured here, our plates overflowed with great food. We had:
- Turkey
- Ham
- Corn
- Cheesy green beans (shout out to Karyl K for her kick-A recipe)
- Fresh baked rolls
- Mashed potatoes w/ gravy
- Candied yams
- Seafoam salad
- Cranberry sauce
- Stuffing
- Pumpkin pie
- Apple pie
- Razzleberry (?) pie
- Pecan pie
There weren’t many of us this year, but we had a super fun time. If you’ve ever been present at a Rogers EXTENDED family meal, you know EXACTLY what I’m talking about.
After eating the big meal, we had some time to blow before watching the movie. We decided to play a rousing game of The Game of Life: Twists and Turns. Diane ended up giving up her spot in the game midway through, which I took over and eventually WON. I blew everyone out of the water!
After the game, it was MOVIE TIME! Everyone seemed to enjoy Harry Potter and Spencer wouldn’t stop talking about Emma Watson.
To finish the night, we played a round of Mario Party (which I just now remember, we actually left there.. do’h!). I ended up winning that as well, and everyone was pretty bitter about it. Jeez!
Anyway, it was relaxing, yet super fun Thanksgiving full of laughs and good food and a slight change from last year’s festivities.
(Natalia, if you have anything to add… let it be in another post… Oh, and I love you.)
date night
November 28, 2010
It has been a while since our last real date night. Last Friday night, Luis and I had gone out to dinner and I was complaining about not having date nights. I told him the reason we didn’t have them anymore was because I have always had to plan them. So you can probably imagine my surprise when I walked in the door following dinner to find this:

Luis had planned a slumber party date night. He brought the extra mattress down from our guest room, made sure to have snacks and goodies ready to go, and even had our pajamas laid out waiting for our return. There was just 1 rule to follow: no laptops. I was a little bothered by this at first since I had gone straight from work to dinner and hadn’t had a chance to do my nightly blog surfing. But once I started winning Mario Party on the Wii, I completely forgot about my laptop :)
Pet peeve
November 27, 2010
It really boils my blood when I see shopping carts strewn about the parking lot. I mean, how hard is it REALLY, to put the carts where they need to go. I guess it just goes to show how LAZY some people can be. Given that the wind here in Vegas can get pretty rough, leaving shopping carts just lying about isn’t the smartest.
Natalia’s attempted to pull this stunt a few times, and I have had to put my foot down… which just means I end up having to put the cart back, but I’m completely okay with that. Hopefully
she doesn’t do this when I’m not around… Tisk tisk.
Natalia: Hold on, hold on. That is most certainly NOT true. If (and when) I don’t put carts away, I at least have the courtesy to put them up against a curb or some other secure area where I know the cart isn’t going to go blowing away.
My plea to you is: PLEASE HAVE THE DECENCY TO RETURN THE CARTS WHERE THEY BELONG WHEN YOU’RE DONE. Thank you. :)
no shame
November 27, 2010
While perusing my local Bed Bath and Beyond circular, I noticed these:

$15 for a set of 12 plates or bowls or mugs. As you’ll notice underneath the display table, there were not very many boxes left by the time Luis and I got to the store. (Did I mention we went on Saturday night… a full 3 days after the circulars had been distributed?). So I found the nearest store employee to ask if they had any boxes stashed anywhere. The nice employee looked, but found nothing. So I did the only other thing I could think of (and the one thing that made my husband run away to hide from me out of sheer embarrassment). I asked the employee if I could just have the display plates.
Luis: FOR THE RECORD! I came up with the idea. But Natalia did tell it right, I ran away and hid.

Much to my delight, not only was he willing to give me the display, he even went to the back to find me a box and some bubble wrap to ensure the plates were secure enough for the ride home.
I know what you’re thinking. $15 for 12 plates? They must be pretty cheapo plates. And guess what? You’re absolutely right. But once our holiday table is set with them, you’ll hardly even notice. And if you really want to complain, then I just won’t invite you over. So there.
The Storm of the Century
November 24, 2010
Yesterday morning I woke up to find Facebook status updates (from my Utah friends) like this:

These were accompanied by headlines in my Google Reader that read:
So, naturally, I was concerned for the safety of all those Utahans I hold dear (heavy on the sarcasm):
Then, later in the day as the “storm” finally hits… status messages like this started to appear:

Needless to say… I got a really big kick out of the fact that this “storm” was SO over-hyped. Here’s what Spencer (who works at the Smith’s in Provo) had to say: (I’m green, Spencer’s gray)

Who else is there to blame than Utah’s media giant KSL?! I mean, honestly!!
In unrelated news, we’re driving up to Provo this evening. Hopefully we won’t run into anything like I did during this experience last year. I still have nightmares about it.
pre-thanksgiving dinner
November 24, 2010
This past Sunday, Luis and I decided to host a little pre-Thanksgiving dinner at our place. This gave me a chance to stretch my culinary muscles. I saw a recipe for bacon wrapped turkey breast and decided I wanted to try it.
The recipe I used called for filling the turkey roll with pear stuffing. Now, I’m not quite that adventurous, so I used just regular turkey Stove Top instead. I also made mashed potatoes (which turned into a gluey, dough-like substance), rolls (which were just a tad overdone, but perfect for dipping in soup the following day), and mixed vegetables.
Luis: I’ll take full blame for the mashed potatoes. And out of all 4 of us, I’m the only one who didn’t leave any potatoes on the plate.

Our friends, Jake and Cami, brought the pie which was enjoyed during a rousing game of Life: Twists and Turns (which I won, thank you very much).
Luis: I’m convinced she cheated. After all, she IS a lawyer. :)

P.S. Don’t mind the awkward treadmill in the background, we have nowhere else to put it.
Luis: For all those wondering, the turkey-wrapped bacon was phenomenal. I had it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner the next day (no joke)… after all, we had TONS of leftovers.
Dentophobia
November 23, 2010
….is the term used to describe the fear of dentists. I will be the first to admit that I am dentophobic. Which is why it was a surprise to me when Natalia came home from a Dentist appointment on Saturday, only to reveal that she had scheduled an appointment for me the following Tuesday (this morning). I wasn’t thrilled.

What I find fascinating is how many full grown adults experience dentophobia. Natalia had told me she had asked the staff when she went if they get a lot of screaming kids. They said not really, and that they mostly get anxiety-riddled adults. I went for my appointment this morning, surprisingly calm. The dentist praised my teeth claiming that they looked “really good” and I had ZERO cavities. (And it’s been well over 5 years since I’ve been to the dentist last).
This whole experience got me wondering … how many of you readers are afraid of the Dentist? If so, why? If not, why not?
Oh, and here’s a little clip from The Simpsons I saw recently about Dentists:
