where is your mother?
January 26, 2012
I was stopped at a red light earlier this week, looked up and saw one of many billboards. My first thought was, “Oh, the Porn Expo is in town again.” (I don’t think that is the official title of their expo, but they do have one here every year.) I then looked closer, to my horror. It is a sign for a Quinceañera!

How on earth is that child supposed to be 15? And would a mom really let her 15 year old set foot outside of the house looking like that?
vegas weddings

I see them every day, but I still haven’t made up my mind about what I think about them. Fun? Tacky? Exciting? Idk. What say ye?
Luis: Super tacky.
arepas
October 12, 2011
Have you ever heard of arepas? I drove past this cute little stand one time during my lunch break and decided to stop and try it. I was familiar with the name because my brother had mentioned it once when I was trying to explain to him what pupusas were. Now these are definitely not pupusas, but they are just as good.

Arepas are… kind of a cross between a tortilla and a pupusa. I’m not sure if they’re all like this, but mine was served sandwich-style. I ordered chicken with cheese (they also had a yummy green sauce to go along with it). I also ordered a sugar cane juice, hoping it would be similar to the Brazilian caldo de cana. It wasn’t and got thrown almost entirely in the trash (cue gasps of horror at my wastefulness).

And if you’re the kind of person who needs dinner and a show, you can just shimmy along to this little establishment across the street:

This is Vegas, after all, what did you expect?
another dirty little secret
September 21, 2011
We all have secrets, right? Want to know another one of mine? (I’m going to assume you just said yes, but if you didn’t, go ahead and stop reading now). Back to my secret — I’m embarrassed about my trash. I know we all have trash. Mine is probably not a whole lot different than yours (unless your husband doesn’t go through 2 boxes of cereal each week all by himself, in which case, my trash probably is different than yours). But that is not necessarily why I find my trash to be embarrassing. What I’m embarrassed about is when we have too many bags to put out on the curb, like this:

Honestly, it should be illegal for 2.5 people to make this much trash in the course of one week. (Yes, Gracie only counts as half because the only trash she makes is diapers and that hardly fills up a quarter of one of our bags). I try to shoot for only making 3 bags worth. Anything more than that is just embarrassing to me. So to remedy the situation, I put some of our bags on our neighbor’s side of the curb. Shhh don’t tell them, they’re never here anyway so they’ll never know :)

My brother and his family came to see us this weekend.

His youngest is only 4 months older than Gracie. I hope they grow up to be the best of friends.

Carolina and Sherry!
DAY 1
Carolina arrives with much fanfare (lets just say that there were formal dresses, wigs, wedding bouquets and sunglasses involved… but I won’t show you the incriminating video so as to not damage relationships). At this point, Luis’ parents were still here and we went out for a family dinner at Claim Jumper, and finally had to say goodbye to Luis’ parents.
DAY 2
We tried to make it to church, but weren’t able to wake up on time. Spent the evening and had dinner with our friends, Suzy and Mike.
DAY 3
This is when the eating-fest began! And for the grand kick-off, we decided to take Carolina to Lucille’s BBQ (seriously, you’ve GOT to try their chicken). This is what I was dealing with during dinner:

We had this one who wouldn’t stop Tweeting

This one just had to keep up to date on Facebook

This one was content to just sleep through the whole thing

And this was the look I got when I complained about it.
DAY 4
Pretty much everyday started with some quality time and photo shoot with Tia Carolina.

This particular evening became Graciela’s first Girl’s Night Out. The plan was to do dinner at Elephant Bar and dessert elsewhere, but we ended up making the mistake of ordering too much at E.B. and being unable to even think about getting dessert.

DAY 5
More photos courtesy of Tia Carolina:

With Day 5 came the arrival of our friend, Sherry. After picking her up from the airport and hanging out at our house for a little while, we hit up JB’s for pizza (well, we hit up JB’s after driving around aimlessly trying to decide where to eat that would be open past 10 p.m.). Normally we really enjoy JB’s but this night was kind of a flop. Good thing we were amongst great company.

DAY 6
Day 6 was a double header. We started off the day trying out the Cracked Egg. Both Carolina and Sherry had heard great things about this place. But in my humble opinion it was just mediocre. Nothing to write home about, but hey at least we tried it and now we know.

Later that evening we took Sherry to Lucille’s. Now we normally would not go to the same place twice in one week, but Carolina looooved her first experience there and practically begged us to go back.

Since we were already at The District, we decided to make a stop at the Green Valley Ranch casino after dinner. They have these cool beds out by the pool where you can just lounge.

DAY 7
Not to be outdone by Day 6′s double header, Day 7 became a triple header. First, we went to Grimaldi’s for New York style pizza at lunchtime. I was feeling a little claustrophobic with the tables practically stacked on top of each other. But Sherry assured me that this was how a lot of places in New York are set up, given the scarcity of land.

For dinner, we took the girls to Pin Kaow (our favorite little Thai place). If you ever go there, order their pineapple fried rice. It is not only delish, but is served in half a pineapple!

And for dessert, good ol’ chili’s. Luis was in the mood for the molten chocolate cake. I’ve been smitten with the caramel apple cobbler. I’m normally pretty good about sharing, but not with this baby. I warned everyone that I was absolutely in LOVE with this dessert and would not be sharing, so if they wanted any, they would have to order their own.

And thus concluded what I have dubbed Eating Fest 2011. We loved having Carolina and Sherry with us, and were sad to have to drop them both off at the airport the next morning.
