Rivalries & Competitiveness
November 30, 2009
On the heels of this weekend’s big game, and its eventual fallout (Hall’s comments, backlash to those comments, his apologies, etc) I have come to a conclusion about what has been bothering me about it all … rivalries and competitiveness usually brings out the absolute WORST in people.
It was intense competitiveness, taken too far, that fueled:
- the post-game comments Max Hall made
- the actions of those Ute fans at last year’s game in regard to Hall’s family
- the phone call Spencer got at work from people complaining that they sold U of U themed flower arrangements (along with the BYU themed ones). They said: “We support BYU here in Provo. I don’t think I can shop somewhere that supports the Utes.”
- Spencer’s rude (but understandable) reaction to this phone call. He said: “I actually really don’t care. I hate BYU and hope the Utes beat the crap out of them.”
- the varying ridiculous Facebook statuses and comments pointing out how Ute fans are (essentially) evil, and how BYU fans are morons
While competition can be mostly fun, if taken too far, it does nothing more than rip people apart… turning one against the other. It festers negativity, resentments, conflict, division, anger, and even hatred. Is this really what this world needs!?
This is the main issue I have with politics of today, and how it is handled (Fox News). They do much more damage than good by polarizing both sides of issues and igniting one side more angrily toward the other resulting in (again) negativity, resentments, conflict, division, anger, and even hatred.
“You’re taking this whole thing way too far, Luis. Rivalry and competition is harmless.”
Sure. Like I said before, competition is usually fun and exciting, but more often than not it is taken too far, and has the potential to spiral completely out of control. Go ahead, enjoy your rivalries and competitions, but remember to keep your head on straight, and not to get lost in it all.
“Yeah, Luis! Those Ute fans… they take the rivalry way too far!”
And so do you, average Cougar fan. So do you.
My 2 Cents: Twilight
November 20, 2009
New Moon is out. I’m not a at all a “fan” of the books, story or characters… nada. I listened to enough of the first book to get a feel for it, and determine that the writing isn’t great in the least, and the reason it’s so popular is that is overly saturated with the annoyingly superficial thoughts and feelings of a teenage girl– thoughts and feelings that every woman and teen girl can and has related to. That is the ONLY reason.
That being said, I didn’t think the movie, as a stand-alone piece of work, was necessarily BAD or STUPID. In fact, I thought it was okay, and didn’t really have a problem with it. Chances are, at some point I’d be interested in watching New Moon, but probably not until it comes out on DVD, and it’s not because I wouldn’t be willing to fork out the cash, but because I’m afraid that even just ONE rabid Twilight fan might also be in the audience, and my tolerance is so LOW for these crazies… I’m afraid we’d have a murder-suicide on our hands.
My Two Cents: The New Macbooks
October 16, 2008

On Tuesday, earlier this week, Apple unveiled their new lines of Macbooks and Macbook Pros. As would be expected with any new release from Apple, there was a fair amount of buzz. Here’s my two cents on the updates:
The Good
- The overall shape and design is much sleeker and cleaner
- Side-loading disc drive a plus (which was already included with the old PowerBooks and iBooks)
- The glass display is very sharp
- Side battery display
- New multi-touch trackpad
- Of course, the inside goods have improved as well
The Not-so Good
- Not a fan of the fact that they have implemented alot of the old MacBook designs to both the new Macbooks and Macbook Pros… It just seems like they’ve taken some steps backward
- The keyboard design (which I much preferred the old Macbook Pro’s)
- There is no latch to close it, it’s controlled by magnets
- The DVI slot for MBP has been replaced by the MB’s mini-DVI
Overall, it bugs me that the MB and the MBP are now exactly the same externally, all sizes aside. Before, you felt (at least, a bit) justified that you were spending $1000 more for the MBP than the MB. But now, you’re ONLY paying for the insides, which in and of itself… is NOT worth $1000. You could have 2 MB for the price of 1 MPB.
So in conclusion, I’m not AS impressed with all of this new stuff, as are most people.
