look who came to visit

I came home from work yesterday to find these two hard at play:

Our good friend, Billy (Luis has known for 6 years and I’ve known for him for 4 years), came into town for a business conference and decided to stay an extra night so he could come see us. Once their video-gaming was done, we headed to Claim Jumper for dinner and then it was off to a rousing game of BINGO!

For those of you who think bingo is for old people, you’re right. We were surrounded by them. The best was the lady sitting at the end of our table who was a playing on a video monitor and was playing 84 cards at a time. I’m pretty sure she thought we were crazy for thinking we might actually have a chance at winning (ha! she didn’t win anything either). But she was really nice to us and would root for us to get the numbers we wanted/needed.

Luis: Personally, I think she had a little crush on Billy. She kept giving him the flirty eye.

Here is what we, as amateurs, accomplished in an hour and 15 minutes:

Luis: Some might consider Bingo gambling… we don’t. If you go in knowing that you’re spending your money just to have a fun time, and an hour and a half worth of entertainment, the 6 bucks is totally worth it!

Confession #9

My name is Luis Merino and I confess that I absolutely loved the children’s movie Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and am SUPER excited for the sequel (opening THIS weekend) Rodrick Rules.

I haven’t read the books (and really, don’t intend to). I can’t quite explain why, but upon watching Diary, I found myself captivated. Although it was clearly a kids movie, the humor wasn’t contrived or childish, the performances were sharp, and the style was refreshing. I enjoyed it almost in the same way I enjoyed Scott Pilgrim (and we all know I LOVED me some Scott Pilgrim).

At some point this weekend, I WILL WATCH THIS MOVIE. What do you say Natalia?

Natalia: I’m okay with that… only because it’s NOT a cartoon.

Look who came to visit

Daniel and Katey drove through town this past Friday and gave us the heads up so we could all get lunch together. So I went to pick Natalia up at her office so we could have a late lunch with them at Tony Roma’s. (I love me the Bistro Burger).

It is always great catching up on everything that has been going on, but it was a blast to be able to see how much little Kylee has grown in the last few months since the last time we saw her. She was a complete sweetheart and so incredibly friendly. She kept smiling at us and playing with us during lunch. It is just so fun to see little ones growing up right before our eyes.

It’s crazy that THIS is how little she used to be:

Daniel & Katey also gave us a little something for our li’l Graciela… (take a look, over at the Family blog).

elvis

Elvis lives. He does. I saw him at 7-Eleven today getting a slurpee. Apparently he is working as an accountant here in Las Vegas. I wanted to get a picture, but I forgot my phone at my office. So you’ll just have to believe me.

iHeart: DT Deluxe

Bah!!! I’ve scoured the internets for a photo/commercial/writeup about the new DT Deluxe burger from Wendy’s. But I’ve found almost nothing. (Does it exist!??!)

(DT stands for “Dave Thomas”)

Anyway, I’ve been finding myself CRAVING this burger lately. They put this special sauce on it that is making my stummy rumbly (yes, stummy). Also, the buttered buns are toasted, and they use lots of yummy vegetables. I’ve been cutting back on Fast Food, so looks like I won’t be going anytime soon. :-/

THIS is the best I could find (courtesy of this blog). This gross photo does the burger NO justice. Seriously, there is no mention of it on the Wendy’s website anywhere.

look who came to visit

My friend, Karina, came to town to see George Straight at the MGM Grand. Of course, her visit would not have been complete without spending some quality time with me :)

On Friday night, Luis tried to take Karina and her cousin, Brian, to our neighborhood hot tub. The three of them got all ready to go, walked over to the pool, and then promptly turned around and returned home because (unbeknown to us) the gate was padlocked. I’m not sure what happened since earlier in the season the HOA had put up a sign saying that while the pool would be closed during the winter months, the hot tub would remain open for resident use. Needless to say, the three of them were just a little disappointed.

The following day, Karina and her cousin made the trek back out to our neck of the woods. Luis met up with them at our local ihop for breakfast (I stayed home to avoid having to endure the smell of food). Later Karina and I went to get pedicures:

And no visit to Las Vegas would be complete without a trip to the Coke store for floats. As we walked in, they bamboozed us into taking pictures with the polar bear.

This reminded me of a picture we took 4 years ago (January 2007 to be exact) when Karina and I went to the Coke store and started this little tradition:

Brian got a root beer float, Karina got a caffeine-free diet coke float (she has given up caffeine for the month), Luis got a grape Fanta float, and I got a strawberry Fanta float.

Karina was also adventurous enough to try the “tastes of the world” where you buy a sample of 16 various sodas Coca Cola manufactures throughout the world. It turned into somewhat of a drinking game for Karina and Brian after they had completely filled their stomachs with their float. I expected it to all come right back up, once they started signing and dancing at their concert, but apparently it didn’t happen.

iHeart: Chili’s

Let me start off with a conversation that Natalia and I had earlier today:

Luis: I love you.

Natalia: How much do you love me?

Luis: I love you more than I love Chili’s.

Natalia: (sincerely) That’s the sweetest thing you’ve ever said to me.

My wife knows me very well… Chili’s is one my favorite places on this planet. Walking in there, is like putting on a comfortable pair of old jeans. I kid you not.

Seriously, I have probably been to Chili’s well OVER 300 times in the last 10 years… that averages to at LEAST 2.5 visits/month… which sounds about right.

Now that Natalia is pregnant and can’t stand the smell of ANY food, I haven’t been to Chili’s in about 2 months… that’s saying a LOT. I miss Chili’s and can’t wait until the day when Natalia comes home from work and says:

Natalia: Lulu, I’m starving! Let’s go to Chili’s!!
