hospital food
September 13, 2011
Have you ever been hospitalized? The last time I had spent time in the hospital was when I was born. This time around (i.e. when Gracie was born), I wasn’t the one in the nursery so I got to try the food. Not that I’ve been dying to try hospital food or anything (because honestly, I haven’t), but I’ve always wondered if it truly is as bad as people say. So here are my thoughts based on my one and only experience:

Right after labor, they gave me fish something or other, potatoes, seasoned veggies, soup, pears, and vanilla ice cream. The fish and potatoes were actually really good. I passed on the soup. The pears were your average, straight from the can, norm. The ice cream? melted. All in all, I gave my first hospital meal a B+

Dinner that night consisted of chicken, rice, corn, a corn muffin, salad, and chocolate cake. The chicken actually didn’t taste like anything. The rice was the same. Corn was from a can, and the muffin was, for some strange reason, a little spicy. I made Luis eat a majority of the food. Second hospital meal: C

Breakfast: Scrambled eggs, potatoes, bacon, fruit, muffin. One more meal that was severely lacking in flavor, which is odd because I always thought that breakfast was one meal you just couldn’t screw up. Third hospital meal: C

Lunch (the meal that almost didn’t happen). In between a million people coming through my room while I was being discharged, they brought in a tray with lunch. I got to actually order this meal myself. Knowing I was being discharged, I decided to order something I thought Luis might enjoy… a cheeseburger with fries. I got one bite. Again, no flavor. Last hospital meal rating: C
The one nice thing, though, was that they had a little snack room that you (and by “you” I mean Luis) and get anything you wanted at any time of the day. And Luis did a great job keeping me well stocked with both cranberry juice and apple juice so I could mix them together to make cranapple :)
cinnacakes
September 3, 2011
You may be wondering what in the world cinnacakes could be. Well wonder no more. They’re what you get when you combine cinnamon rolls and pancakes (duh). And how would you go about doing that? Simple. You start with pancake batter:

Add a swirl of cinnamon-sugar goodness:

And then top it off with a cream cheese glaze. No, I don’t have a picture of it. It was too delicious to stop to take a picture, so just imagine a sugary/cream cheesy glaze on top of the pancakes. I won’t take credit for coming up with this recipe, though. I got it here.
P.S. I made them again the following day, trying a shortcut by using the just-add-water pancake mix and it didn’t work very well. So take it from me, it is worth the effort to make the cakes as the recipe dictates.
That’s just wrong

For years and years, Natty told me how she thought it was “weird” how people ate avocados with salty-type foods. For her (apparently) avocados we’re supposed to be eaten sweet, blended, and served in smoothie-form. This had always intrigued me, and I was curious to try such a concoction… until I actually saw it:

A couple weeks back she actually made some, and it looks less appetizing than it appears… and tastes even worse (in my opinion anyway). I tried it, and it was like tasting guacamole with a lot of sugar in it. Bleck!
Natalia loved it though.
corn on the cob
July 8, 2011

Have you ever noticed how corn on the cob tastes so much better than when it is not on the cob? At Chili’s the chicken crispers always come with corn on the cob (I never order chicken crispers, but Luis sometimes does). Luis cuts the corn off of the cob and eats the corn with a fork. I always try to sneak a bite of the corn before it gets de-cobbed because it is just that much better. Now, I’m not saying that other forms of corn aren’t good, it is just that corn on the cob is better. The end.
just because it is expensive…

Doesn’t mean it is all that good.

The other day my boss went to a lunch at the Golden Nugget and brought us each a cupcake (I have a really great boss that randomly does nice things like that). Although this cupcake looked phenomenal, it was somewhat lacking in taste. Imagine a boxed devil cake mix and a dark chocolate frosting. That was what it tasted like.
oranges

Some farmer (at least that is what he claimed to be) walked into our office today selling cases of oranges. Guess who is going to be eating oranges for the next month?
cupcakes

YUM!

Clockwise: Red Velvet, Strawberry macaroon, Oreo, Lemon with Strawberry frosting, and Chocolate Chip Cookie.
(And yes, my stomach keeps getting bigger and bigger)
Edit: I forgot to mention that 2 of the cupcakes were for Luis. I didn’t eat 4 cupcakes and a macaroon. I know I’m pregnant, but I’m not crazy!
