Her Work
back to work
September 6, 2011
2 years ago today (and by “today” I mean the Tuesday after Labor Day), I started my first real grownup job.

So this year I celebrated my 2-year anniversary by going back to work after being gone for a full month.

And, naturally, after being gone all day for the first time since the beginning of August, I came straight home after work to squeeze my little Graciela for a few hours.

To be honest, going back to work was really not bad at all, and there were no tears (neither on her part nor on mine).
reuse, reduce and recycle
April 25, 2011
A couple of weeks ago, one of our clients brought in some thoughtful Thank You gifts to the office staff. Attached to one of the gifts was this balloon:

Not wanting to be wasteful, and in honor of the upcoming Earth Day, we decided to reuse the balloon for one of the staff member’s birthdays.

Hehe, I thought it was clever.
merry belated christmas
March 25, 2011
I had wanted a new Coach purse for Christmas. But when we found out we were pregnant, I just couldn’t justify spending a couple hundred dollars on a purse when I knew we would have lots of expenses this upcoming year. This is all fine and dandy for me, but for Luis (who needed to find a present for me), it presented a challenge.
Come Christmas morning, he handed me an envelope with a picture on it. The picture was of a piece of artwork he had painted years ago, that I loved. He told me he would get it printed on a canvas for my office.

This week it was finally delivered :)
Luis: The original piece of art (which is hanging behind me in our home office) doesn’t look half as vibrant and interesting as the canvased piece does. The photo above really doesn’t do it much justice. In case anyone’s wondering, I painted this 7 years ago for a 2D Art class. It represents Family.
luck of the irish
March 19, 2011
I have an Irish boss. Both of his parents are natives. So St. Patrick’s Day is kind of a big deal at our office. Last year I made the mistake of not wearing any green on St. Patrick’s Day, and I was ridiculed all day. This year, I made sure to wear a green necklace, just to be safe. For lunch, we had the traditional corned beef and cabbage, with potatoes and carrots (my boss ordered the food from Marie Calendar’s). It was surprisingly pretty good after I doused the potatoes and carrots with a good dose of salt.

I ate almost all of that food (which is a TON for me these days). And then I topped it off with a slice of apple pie and a brownie dessert that I made (the one that Luis so lovingly put me on blast for a few days ago when I left a mess in the kitchen). The brownie dessert was quite delicious. It is kind of a layered “bar” type of dessert. Brownie layer on the bottom, followed by a hot fudge layer, followed by an ice cream layer, followed by a whipped cream layer. Followed by a heart attack.
Luis: Put me down for 3 heart attacks, please! :)
lola’s – a louisiana kitchen
March 10, 2011

At my office, we have a little tradition to go out to lunch for people’s birthdays. It is not that we don’t go to lunch at other times, but we rarely go with everyone so birthdays are kind of special. The honoree always gets to choose the restaurant, and yesterday’s birthday girl chose Lola’s – A Louisiana Kitchen.
As with the last time we all went to lunch together, I thought the restaurant was delicious. Unfortunately, not everyone in the group necessarily agreed… but then again, we didn’t have very many sea food lovers, which is just too bad for them because both the birthday girl and I were lovin’ it.
We started out with crab cakes for an appetizer (sorry for the lack of pictures, but I just couldn’t pull out the camera in front of the rest of the office staff). They were absolutely delish. My main dish was the blackened catfish with sweet potato fries and coleslaw. I wasn’t a huge fan of the coleslaw, but the rest of the food hit the spot, and I ate way too much. I just adore sweet potato fries. And the catfish? Cooked to perfection, in my opinion.
The birthday girl had bronzed catfish, but she went with the platter that comes with grits, gouda grits to be exact. This was my first time trying grits, and it just wasn’t my thing. Sorry if you loves some grits, but I just wasn’t feeling it. The rest of the staff played it safe: jambalaya, shrimp fettuccine, pot roast po’ boy, and ham po’ boy.
Next time I go there (yes, there will be a next time since I absolutely have to have those crab cakes again), I would definitely get the catfish again, but I also want to try their charbroiled oysters, gumbo, crawpuppies, and the bread pudding, which comes with a rum praline sauce.
if i had a bed in my office
February 23, 2011
I feel so tired that the simple act of driving home seems like a major chore. If I had a bed at my office, I might just spend the night tonight. But then again, I would probably get really scared sleeping here by myself and would have to call Luis in the middle of the night to come stay with me. So I guess it is better that I don’t have a bed at my office.
