His School

iHeart: Charlie Chaplin

Along with the film editing class this semester, I also took Major Figures in Cinema. This particular section focused primarily on Charles Chaplin. For those who don’t know who this man was, he:

  • was possibly the biggest star cinema’s silent film era
  • was born and raised in England
  • directed, produced, starred in, and composed his larger feature length films
  • was riddled with controversy in his personal life
  • was exiled from the United States in 1953 (J. Edgar Hoover thought he was a Commie)
  • only returned to the US for 10 days in 1973 to accept an Oscar
  • passed away on Christmas Day in 1977

I remember my first experience with any of Chaplin’s works was during an Intro to Film class I took one summer at BYU in 2005. We watched his 1931 masterpiece City Lights. I was floored. I didn’t know silent films could be so genuinely funny, yet compelling at the same time. I had no idea Charlie Chaplin was such a genius, and one I would consider to be the father of Comedic film. Not only was he an amazing comedian, he was also a truly gifted storyteller.

Here are some of my favorites from his very extensive filmography:

  • The Kid is Chaplin’s first feature length movie. The Little Tramp (the character Chaplin is famous for) finds an orphan baby and raises it as his own. Years later, Social services try to take the boy away from his adoptive father, as seen here:

  • The Gold Rush is the film that features this FAMOUS scene:

  • City Lights is my favorite. The ending is very sweet. Here’s the funny boxing sequence from that film:

  • The Great Dictator was the film Chaplin made ridiculing Adolf Hitler and the Nazi movement. Chaplin said that had he known the full extent of the Nazi atrocities, he would not have made this film (because of how light he makes of something that he did not know was SO serious). It’s a very funny film with a truly powerful speech at the end.

Little know that Chaplin actually wrote the music for “Smile” a song used in his film Modern Times. It was covered during an episode of Glee last season:

He was truly a fascinating subject to study and learn about this semester. Robert Downey, Jr., gave an Oscar-nominated portrayal of Charlie in the 1992 biopic Chaplin. Here’s the trailer for that movie:

Secret passageway

On Fridays, I have a video editing class at UNLV. It’s a good class and all, but it’s a whopping THREE HOURS long. And sometimes, I get a li’l rumbly in my tumbly (if you know what I mean). Luckily there is a McDonald’s only feet from my classroom. The only problem is, there is a chain-link fence separating UNLV campus from the McDonald’s.

This was quite the predicament for me because the extra time to walk around said fence would make it impossible for me to get there and back in the short 5 minute break allotted in the middle of class. That is… until I discovered the secret passageway (cue the Zelda opening sound effect):

Our Year in Milestones

Our Christmas Letter

And finally, part 6 of Our Christmas Letter debut. The final video chronicles “Our Year in Milestones.”

Natalia: 2009 was a HUGE year of accomplishments from graduating from Law school to getting our first iPhones!

Leave me alone already!

Last week, I received a wave of emails from school telling me to submit instructor evaluations– 1 email per class (that’s a total of 6 emails).  Yesterday, during my morning class I received not 1, but 2 more waves (that’s another 12 emails). Throughout the afternoon I received another 2 waves (that’s another 18 emails). Before going to sleep, I received another wave (6 emails).

I wake up this morning to discover THIS:

Picture 11

…(notice the “(7)”) an additional 2 waves of evaluation notices that just HAD to be sent to me over night. I mean after all, that is why the world falls apart in the movie 2012, right? …Because students at universities throughout the country failed to fill out their instructor evaluations? Correct me if I’m wrong… DOUBLE-YOU TEE EFF!?

So if you lost count, that’s a total of 48 emails!!

I just threw up my hands and said “what the heck.” In filling out the teacher evaluations I had to give out one of these:

If they’re determined to get me to fill this crap out, I’m determined to make it count for SOMETHING. Hopefully I will now be left alone.

Is it over yet?

It’s been quite the rough semester for me. Between packing our stuff, moving our stuff, traveling back and forth between Provo and Vegas, 19 credit hours, work, extra side-projects, and weekends devoted to Natalia… I’ve hardly had time to breathe (it seems). I can NOT wait until the 17th. You have no idea excited I am to be able to have nothing to worry/stress about.

Here’s what’s in store for the holiday break:

  • Dec. 14-17: Finals
  • Dec. 17: Vegas! I’m going to be spending a few days in Vegas with Natalia.
  • Dec. 21: Dallas!! Unfortunately, Natalia has to work up until the 23rd and insisted I go on ahead to Dallas so that I don’t stay home all day essentially wasting time, especially since my brother and his family are already going to be there.
  • Dec. 23: Natalia joins me in Dallas! :)
  • Dec. 27: Natalia has to return to work in Vegas. :(
  • Dec. 31: But that’s okay, cause she’s coming back! :)
  • Jan. 3: Which inevitably means she has to leave again. :(
  • Jan. 5: I fly straight back to Utah. Boo.
  • Jan. 6: My final semester in college begins… (I hope.)

luis’ big day

First day of kindergarten and First day of senior year of college

Here is my big boy all ready for his first day back at school :) It seems like it was only yesterday, he was getting his little red backpack and tucking in his shirt to go off to his first day of school, ever. And now he is all grown up, refusing to tuck in his shirt and is off to his last first day of school, ever.

For the last couple of weeks I have seen everyone post pictures of their kids going back to school. So I just had to join in on the fun. I wanted to follow Luis to his classes and take pictures of him with his teachers, but he wouldn’t let me. And since he doesn’t line up with his friends on the sidewalk waiting for the bus to come pick him up, I had to settle for taking a picture of him getting ready and driving off to his first day of school.
