The Place
The Schoolmate’s Birthday
April 15, 2011
Remember this kid?

He’s my “schoolmate” and he turns 27 today!
Happy Birthday SM!
Four years ago, when Natalia and I were single, we threw an epic Luau-themed birthday party for Brent, as evidenced here:

Ode to April Fool’s
March 31, 2011

Truth be told, I’ve never been too much a fan of April Fool’s Day. The idea of being tricked and made a FOOL just wasn’t appealing… for some reason.
But, there has been one April Fool’s Day that I will forever remember. (Seeing how this post is about April Fool’s Day, and/or that you may personally know Cody & Larkin, I know you know how this all ends up).
Four years ago, it was General Conference weekend (as it happens to be this weekend), and our friends Cody & Larkin had gone out of town. The rumor mill was churning and everyone knew that Cody was set to propose to Larkin that weekend. So you can imagine our surprise when they returned sad and distant.
Here’s how things went down:
No, I’m not a fan of April Fool’s Day, but each April First, I will undoubtedly remember that Sunday evening back in 2007, with some sort of goofy smile. Good times.
Have a good (and SAFE) April Fool’s Day tomorrow!
If you’re interested in watching the complete episode (which includes more about Cody & Larkin’s relationship, and a hilarious proposal re-enactment where Billy plays Cody, Larkin, Larkin’s mom, and Larkin’s dad) here it is.
Happy Birthday Spencer
March 26, 2011

He turns 26 today, and in honor of the occasion, here is a clip from a The Place episode about the Roast Natalia & I threw for him at his 22nd birthday party, four years ago today.

The Place Monday: Four Years Ago
January 3, 2011
A few months ago I had the idea to try and release Season 2 episodes in “real time” meaning… trying to release episodes on the 4th anniversary of when they happened.
For example, I really wanted to air the episode with Daniel & Katey’s wedding on (or before) the date of their anniversary. I hope to do the same with other milestones like Mike’s, Brent’s, Spencer’s, and my birthdays. Cody & Larkin’s proposal episode (which took place on April Fool’s day) I hope to air on (or before) April 1st, and the Super Bowl episode I hope to put out (on or before) the Super Bowl this year… so on and so forth (you get the idea).
Hopefully I can stay “on the ball” enough to just that. If you haven’t taken a look at the first 3 episodes of Season 2, hop on over to the site to watch em. And, as always, thanks for watching!
The Place Monday: A hobby
December 20, 2010
The Place. Some of you have actually participated in it’s production, while most of you at least know what it is (if not, click here). For many of you they’re just silly video clips of college kids being college kids. For me, it’s a window back to a place and time when it seemed that life was much simpler. But it’s also more than that, especially now, four years later… it’s a hobby– and a rewarding one at that.
This week I have released the first episode of the newly re-edited Season 2 (source material is dated December 2006), and as silly as this series is, I’m grateful for the creative satisfaction I derive from it. I revel when I am able to weave random clips and interviews together… then with music and graphics, actually CREATE something that works.
Here is the updated opening credit sequence for Season 2 (at around 0:24 you will see some familiar faces):
It’s a truly satisfying experience. That’s why when it comes time to release episodes, I am quite excited about showing them off and hearing how they are received– by those who are actually in the videos, as well as those who have never seen them before. So excited, in fact, that it might even grow to the point of annoyance. :)
Regardless if they are liked, or even watched, I’m just grateful to have such a fun and rewarding creative outlet, and I’m super grateful for having a wife who understands and appreciates that. Thank you to everyone who watches and supports The Place– my hobby.
So, this is THE PLACE?!

Luis: This post is mainly intended for all of Natalia’s friends and acquaintances who have no idea what THE PLACE, is. I asked her to write a little something about to familiarize all of you with it. Thanks!
As a basic rundown, THE PLACE was this reality/documentary series for the web that Luis had produced from September 2006 (around the time he & I met) to December 2007, and were based on the crazy adventures of his circle of friends (which had already begun to include me).
I only showed up here and there in the first season, but in the second season, I was an official member of the cast with my own spot in the opening titles.
A local publication aimed at students, even wrote a blurb about THE PLACE. It appeared in the September 2007 issue of “Schooled Magazine:”
THE PLACE grew from a one-time experiment, to two whole seasons (nearly fifty episodes), touching on things like:
- singles ward romance
- life in Provo
- Toaster Strudel Tuesday
- singles ward life
- marriage engagements & proposals
- ward activities & parties
- the band, 500 Dollar Fine
- late night escapades
- dealing with roommates
- cleaning checks
- lots of eating out
- marriage
- but most of all, friendship
In this clip, from episode 6, our friends Daniel and Katey have recently become engaged, and in order to illustrate the proposal, Luis decided to film a re-enactment starring me as Katey.
Last year, Luis removed all of the original THE PLACE episodes from YouTube and began his initiative to cut down, fix, and re-edit each and every episode (he was never fully satisfied with how they turned out)…
And so it begins… (Again)
January 5, 2009
This week marks the beginning of the re-release of the new, re-done, episodes of THE PLACE.
Episode 1, “The Branbury Crew” is online and available now. I’ve put a lot of work into these new episodes, so I hope everyone enjoys them. :)
