google translate
May 14, 2012
Have you used Google Translate? It is pretty cool. For those of you who may not know, I speak Portuguese fluently. However, I only attended school in Brazil until 1st grade, so my spelling isn’t exactly spectacular. Which makes it difficult when I want to write to relatives because I am so afraid that I am misspelling words. But I think I’ve found a possible solution. Unlike regular online dictionaries, you type in a full sentence in Google Translate. It gives you its first translation and then you can click on words that are not correctly translated and it will give you other options.

It is not perfect (obviously) but it is good enough for me.

It was September 26, 2009, when Natalia, Spencer, Carolina, and I walked into the AT&T Store at the University Mall in Orem. Our mission? purchase new iPhones for ourselves. It was this day, that I met a new best friend of mine:

It was over 14 months when my li’l buddy would befall its first major incident:

I got it repaired, but in weeks, it was again… cracked.
Fast forward to Monday, June 27, 2011… We were hanging out at the pool and I made sure to check my pockets before entering the water. No phone. Apparently, I didn’t check hard enough. The phone fell into a deep sleep… one it would not soon (or ever) emerge.
So, I’d like to now honor my fallen friend and all of the service it rendered to me.
Here’s to you buddy!!
Comatose
June 29, 2011
I have some sad news to report. If you are my Facebook friend, you are already aware of the grave situation. On Monday night, while at the pool, a horrible accident occurred. After about an hour of splish-splashing around, I notice a strange brick-like object in my left pocket. Horrified, I pull it out, to discover that my beloved iPhone has been immersed in water.
Let the record show! I checked my pockets before stepping in the pool! Obviously though, not well enough.
Upon arriving home that evening, I quickly did what many suggested: PUT YOUR PHONE IN A BAG OF RICE! They said. So, currently, my phone is in a state of comatose. I don’t know whether he’ll survive or not. Things aren’t looking so well. Later tonight, I’ll have to pull him off life support, and if he doesn’t make it… then he doesn’t make it. I’ll be sure to be holding a wake for him RIGHT HERE, on Mertinso, if he doesn’t.
Google Reader… in Plain English
April 19, 2011
It has become apparent to me that not everyone uses Google Reader. I believe that is because they either don’t know about it, or don’t know what it does. So, for those of you out there in the blogging world, here’s in intro to Google Reader (which is vastly superior to whatever means of reading blogs you use… seriously).
If you aren’t using it… start TODAY!! Add us to your Google Reader by using THIS feed:

In other news… if you haven’t joined up on the site in the side bar… we’re gonna start calling you out BY NAME. Like I said, it won’t be pretty. :)
Dear Commenters
April 16, 2011

I’m SO sorry that your comments have somehow ended up in the Spam folder. I can’t possibly see why my filter identified them as such. Allow me to appropriately respond to your KIND KIND, HEARTFELT, and nicely ARTICULATED and WRITTEN comments.

Dear Mr. Covers,
Thank you for reading our blog. I’m glad that my post about a HUGE OVERCOMPENSATING truck made you think. Thank you.
Dear Mr. Enlargment,
First, let me thank you for the hundreds and HUNDREDS of comments you’ve left on my blog that have unfortunately been sent to the Spam folder. My sincerest apologies. I was planning on making my blogiversary post head to “some dull old publish” but decided a sharp new publish was the way to go.
Thank you.
Dear Ms. Paketrsor, greetings!
I’m sorry that at your office your obviously being watched like a hawk. I imagine that you’re trying to comment on my blog as the guards/security in your office are between shifts… otherwise, you’d have absolutely NO time to write… nonetheless! I truly appreciated you commenting on my “bunch of really good stuff.” Thanks!
Regards, Mr. Mertinso.
Dear Mr. Extrusion,
If you’d like to read more from me, have I got the website for YOU! It’s… http://mertinso.com .. you’lll be able read UNIQUE and EFFECTIVE THOUGHT PROCESSES … like how to properly replace TOILET PAPER!

Thank for your support.
My new cleaning buddy
March 25, 2011
…is this li’l guy:

(Without going into some long random story) I ended up with him for free, but didn’t have the USB-to-headphone cable needed to both charge, and load songs. After months of putting off ordering a cheap-o one online (Apple sells that rink-a-dink cable for $19), I finally did ($4). And *BAM* he came to life.
Cleaning or doing dishes with my iPhone was a bit of a hassle (to say the least), that involved using a combination of:
- a headphone cable extender,
- a twisty tie,
- a pocket
- and a small binder clip
(I’m not kidding…. So, I like getting creative. Sue me!)
Having this li’l guy is so nice! I love that it’s:
- practically weightless,
- has a clip,
- and I can play/pause/turn up or down volume/skip songs without having to LOOK at it, just by feeling it with my fingers
You can’t really do that with the stupid iPhone touch screen! (Perhaps you recall this post from a year ago)
So, yeah. That’s him. Maybe I should give him a name? Any ideas?
Where is Luis?
February 12, 2011
When all the posts on the home page are by Natalia, I know it’s been a LONG time since I’ve actually posted. So, where have I been? That’s actually a very good question.
Believe it, or not, I’m kept quite busy during the day. Among dishes, cleaning, (occasionally) cooking, laundry, errands, grocery shopping, exercising, The Place, working on various side projects, preparing Priesthood lessons, going to Institute, shuffling to doctors’ appointments, and giving my lovely wife the attention she deserves… I’m also in the midst of starting up a little side business for myself (more on this later). For this, we’ve invested in a new computer. And so, working (and playing) on this thing, has been using a lot of my time… which is a very good thing.
Here is my new setup:
My new computer (on the left) and my old computer (on the right.)
It may be smaller than my old one, but it also packs a punch!
I now hope to be posting here a little more often.
