Baby stuff

nursery

With a baby on the way, about a month and a half ago I figured it was time we got around to finishing up her little room. The crib I had originally picked for her was out of stock, so I got stuck having to select a new one. Not a fun task. I’m picky. But I eventually selected one, ordered it, and it finally came in. So Luis and I made our way to good ol’ Walmart to pick up the crib and some last-minute items. Unfortunately, you have to go all the way to the back of the store to pick up items you’ve ordered online, and then make your way through the store with the items.

Given the size of our stuff, and the fact that Walmart tends to leave everything in the middle of their aisles, this was no easy feat. But we made it out to our car, and manged to fit it all in.

We then headed home and got everything all put together. Even though at first I was convinced I could do it on my own, it took the both of us to get the crib put together. But now it is all up and ready for Graciela to lay her little head in.

Here is one more quick little sneak peek at part of her room:

The room isn’t quite finished yet, but it is close. Luis is still going to paint a couple of things for the walls. But I’m happy with how it is turning out.

babies r us registry

After registering at Target, we went to register at Babies R Us on Friday night. Initially I thought it would be overkill to register at 2 locations. Target’s prices tend to be a little cheaper, but Babies R Us has a much greater selection of items. So we did both. Just like at Target, Babies R Us also gives you a little gift bag when you register with them. Right off the bat, I noticed that Babies R Us’ bag was much more full than Target’s had been. But more full doesn’t necessarily mean it was a better haul.

Unlike Target, this was just a regular bag that will end up being thrown away.

They start off by giving you this booklet with information about their registry system. It also has a handy checklist of common registry items you don’t want to forget.

My second ginormous box holding one little newborn diaper and wipes.

This was pretty cool. A free 5 x 7 photo book from Kodak.

Coupon for $4 off a baby straight jacket.

My very first issue of American Baby magazine with a code for a free year’s subscription.

12 free birth announcements from Shutterfly. Unfortunately, I am going to need WAY more than 12 birth announcements. Plus, they make you register for Pampers’ rewards program in order to get the cards. No thank you.

Coupons for Avent breast pump, storage set, and bottles.

New Parent En Espanol. Awesome! I’ve been wanting to learn to speak Spanish. Maybe this magazine will teach me. NOT! At first I thought, “Do they assign gift bag languages based on your name? I don’t even speak Spanish!” But then I saw this:

This version was in English.

Last was this item. I have no idea what it is supposed to be used for. It is a list of a bunch of tommee tippee items with bar codes. Maybe it was meant to be used during the registry process? But they didn’t give this to us until after I was done scanning everything I wanted, so I’m confused.

All in all, I think Target had a better haul. Their coupons were a little better and they had a couple of more free items than Babies R Us gave. I thought it would have been the other way around, considering the fact that Babies R Us specializes in just baby stuff, whereas Target does not. You live and learn I guess.

target registry

In preparation for our baby showers, Luis and I finally went to register. We did our registry at Target on Thursday night. When you register there, they give you a little gift bag. Ever wondered what is in those bags? Well wonder no more:

I liked that their little gift bag was a reusable shopping bag. I will definitely be re-using this.

I actually felt a little irritated when I saw this. The bag had this box, so naturally you assume there is something large in the box. But no, it is one little newborn diaper and some wipes. Hello? Has anyone heard of the environment. Having this whole box for such a small item just seems so wasteful… especially after they go through the trouble of giving you a reusable shopping bag.

Again, another example of wastefulness. A tiny little sample of baby lotion in a big package.

Breast milk storage bags. I don’t think I’ll be getting much use out of this.

$20 towards a Shutterfly photo book. Score!

Nursing pads. These will come in handy (or so I hear).

A coupon for $4 off a sleep sack. To me, these look like straight jackets from the insane asylum. But if they work, then great.

This coupon is actually pretty cool too. A free 6-pack of 2 fl. oz. formula filled bottles. I am at a completely loss when it comes to selecting formula for the baby, and this sure is a good way to get me to try something I might not try otherwise.

I can honestly tell you that unless the baby is extremely colicky, I will not be using this coupon. These bottles are super expensive, and have a bunch of different parts that go with them. And for only $1 off? Totally not worth it.

$5 off Gerber formula. Not as good as the free Enfamil, but still not too shabby of a coupon. My only complaint is that the advertisement is about the size of a normal bib, and the coupon itself is only the size of a gift card. Wastefulness, once again.

I really wish this Gerber coupon were of more value, because this is something I will almost certainly be using. It can be used for any Gerber clothing or bedding. So I’ll probably be using my $1 off on onesies.

I keep hearing that both Pampers and Huggies are a waste of money and that less expensive brands work just fine.

The last two items are a $10 off coupon for a breast pump and 20% off maternity clothes. The breast pump coupon is going in the trash. The maternity clothes coupon I’ll hang on to in case I end up buying anything else, but so far I haven’t been too impressed with Target’s maternity section (or lack thereof).

bow making

I feel like I know a million girls who are pregnant right now. Kiersten being one of them. She had mentioned on her blog that she had been making hair bows (she is having a girl and is due a week after me). So I suggested we get together for a little bow making night.

This was the mess we began with.

I think we eventually got the hang of putting these together.

And here is the final outcome. I think they turned out pretty cute. I have since made another 5 pairs of bows that look like the pink ribbon ones above (in other colors, of course).

this child is loved

We still have 3 months before this little one makes her arrival, and yet she is already receiving gifts from those who love and can’t wait to meet her.

This little octopus was brought all the way from Hawaii from my good friend, Karina. Graciela may not know it yet, but she is going to love her aunty Karina Chicken Marsala :)

Before my friend, Ankitha, moved away from Las Vegas, she insisted on leaving behind a little something for Graciela. It will take a little while before Graciela is big enough to fit into this cute dress, but I hope she’ll love it just as much as I do.

At Easter, Graciela received her very first Easter basket and bunny from Aunty Suzy and Uncle Mike (our good friends who have become family to us here in Las Vegas).

I was given Graciela’s very first puzzle from my friend, Suzy and her family, along with a couple of cute pink organic onesies when Mother’s Day rolled around.

And last, but not least, Graciela received a whole gift bag full of goodies from her Aunt Niki, Uncle Flavio and her cousins. I love the “this is my little black dress” onesie. I want to make a little tutu to go with it :)

just a tad over the top

Do you worry about your baby having the perfect pedicure?

Are your baby’s piggies just not up to par with the rest of the playgroup girls?

Well, fret no more! Introducing…

Jazzy Toes Socks!

Now your baby will never have to suffer the embarrassment of being caught without the perfect pedi.

For our first boy

I’m going to love having a little girl, I know it. But I find myself coming across lots of stuff for boys that I would TOTALLY buy for my child. Here’s one of them.

Look! It has a cape too!!!! Isn’t that awesome!?!

bedding

To follow up Luis’ dream nursery post, I thought I should post what I’m actually doing for the baby’s room.

It is from the Bananafish Lily collection at Target. As I read through the comments online, I saw that most people complained about how long they had to wait for the bedding to be delivered. So I went ahead and purchased the bumper last night. For sheets, I’m going to stick to plain solid colors (wherever I find the cheapest since I hear babies often get diaper leaks and the sheets are going to get messy). The skirt I’ve decided I’m actually going to make myself. I’m still undecided whether to follow the example above, or if I want a ruffled skirt. So once I decide, I’ll get to sewing.

A guy can dream

If it were up to me, here’s how I would want our child’s room to look:

But it’s not up to me, is it. :(

adding to the cuteness

Our friends Daniel and Katey came through town with their little girl and stopped to have lunch with us today. On their way out, they gave Graciela her very first present. Well, I should clarify. Graciela has received a few other presents, but this is the first she has received since we found out she was going to be a little Graciela and not a little Lucas. Up until now everything was very gender neutral. But now? Bring on the frilly and girly!
