Weekly Updates

week 40

Pregnancy Highlights

How Far Along: 40 weeks (8/2)
Total Weight Gain/Loss: 13 lbs. gained
Size of baby: 7.5 lbs, 20 inches (it will be interesting to see how big she ends up being in real life)
Movement: I explained to the doctor this week that there are days when it feels like the baby is having a dance party in there, and other days when she is just really sluggish. Just to be safe, the doctor decided to send me to the hospital for monitoring. Luis was just a little irritated with me because I was on the phone with my office the entire way to the hospital making sure things were taken care of. We got to the hospital, I was put in a bed in triage, and they hooked up some monitors. Long story short, 20 minutes later we were on our way back to our regularly-scheduled lives.
Sleep: I tend to sleep well through the night, but then I wake up around 5 or 6 am, realize that my water hasn’t broken and I’m still not having contractions. I have conversations in my head, telling the baby she needs to hurry up and get here because this whole waiting game isn’t for me. And then I can’t go back to sleep.
Cravings: This week, what I’ve wanted more than anything, is to always have dessert after dinner. While this may be a “pregnancy craving” to some, to me it just seems like my body is wanting to go back to its normal, dessert-loving self.

Symptoms: Unfortunately, I actually feel pretty good. Sure, there are aches and pains that go along with carrying a bowling ball’s worth of weight in my stomach, but that is about it. No contractions. No bleeding. No blood pressure problems. As of my last doctor’s appointment, I was dilated to 3 cm, which is both great and terrible. It is great bc it is indicative that I’m progressing, terrible bc it means the doctor is hesitant to induce me. Although I would prefer to go into labor on my own, with Luis’ family coming in from Texas, and only being able to stay for a short amount of time, I would really like for this baby to make a quick appearance. However, there are days (like yesterday) where it just feels like I’ll never go into labor. Hopefully come next week, we’ll be doing a post about the baby’s first week of life instead of my continued pregnancy saga.

week 39

Pregnancy Highlights

How Far Along: 39 weeks
Total Weight Gain/Loss: 12 lbs. gained
Size of baby: just over 7 lbs, 20 inches
Movement: All of the sudden, baby’s kicks seem to actually be hurting. It is like she is trying to puncture a hole through my stomach.
Sleep: I’ve been waking up 3-4 each night to go to the bathroom.
Cravings: I think about the future and I want all you can eat sushi and crab legs as soon as humanly possible. Plus I’m hoping that my love of red meat will come back. I’m getting tired of eating chicken.

Symptoms: It hurts really bad to stand up and walk around after having been sitting for a couple of hours, and I waddle when I walk.

week 38

Pregnancy Highlights

How Far Along: 38 weeks
Total Weight Gain/Loss: 10 lbs. gained
Size of baby: 6.8 lbs, over 19 1/2 inches
Movement: For some reason, the baby seems to know that Sunday is the day of rest. Consequently, she moves very little on Sundays, and scares me to death. The rest of the week she is pretty active around 11 am, 2 pm, 4 pm and 7 pm. I don’t know what it is about those times, but that is when she seems to move the most.
Sleep: I’m still sleeping pretty well. I wake up 3-4 times to go to the bathroom, but am usually able to fall right back to sleep.
Cravings: Several weeks ago, I had wanted to eat watermelon and it upset my stomach. This past week, I’ve eaten almost an entire watermelon all by myself without any problems.
Symptoms: Lets just say that the force of gravity is working against me. I’m sore and achy, but this still beats all the nausea I’ve experienced. Plus it is nothing compared to what others go through. I’ve had no heartburn, no acid reflux, the baby doesn’t kick my ribs, and my lungs have had plenty of room to breathe. So I guess I can consider myself lucky.

week 37

Pregnancy Highlights

How Far Along: 37 weeks
Total Weight Gain/Loss: 10 lbs. gained
Size of baby: 6.3 lbs, just over 19 inches
Movement: She moves around quite a bit. It is interesting because people say at this point they are starting to move less since they’re getting so big. But since I hardly felt her earlier in the pregnancy, I feel like she moves all the time.
Sleep: I’ve been sleeping ok. I’m not doing very well about going to sleep early so I wake up really tired, but it has little to do with the pregnancy and more to do with my wanting to stay up late.
Cravings: I don’t crave anything any more than my normal cravings before pregnancy.
Symptoms: My feet have been swelling. I had one night where my right foot had a major cankle, but generally it is just minor overall swelling that makes it uncomfortable to stand on. I’ve been wearing soft flip flops at work when I’m not seeing clients.

week 36

Pregnancy Highlights

How Far Along: 36 weeks
Total Weight Gain/Loss: 8 lbs. gained
Size of baby: 6 lbs, 18.5 inches
Movement: Lots of it.
Sleep: Every night.
Cravings: I’ve been thinking about hot dogs lately, and I’ve kind of wanted one. I ended up having one yesterday, and it just didn’t taste all that great to me.
Symptoms: The achiness continues to mount.

Size of baby: 5.25 lbs, 18 inches
Movement: Yep.
Sleep: Depends on the night. Usually I do pretty well.
Cravings: None really.

34 weeks

Total Weight Gain/Loss: 8 lbs. gained
Size of baby: 4.75 lbs, almost 18 inches

Sleep: I do it every night.
Cravings: I’m back to a point where I like my dessert, and I can eat red sauce on pasta without wanting to gag.
Symptoms: I’m still the morning nausea is down to only once a week. Who would have ever thought I would be able to wake up without throwing up? For a while there, I thought this was a life-long curse.

week 33

Pregnancy Highlights

How Far Along: 33 weeks
Total Weight Gain/Loss: 5 lbs. gained
Size of baby: 4 lbs, 17 inches
Movement: She is a stubborn little thing. She’ll be moving and moving and then when I have someone come put their hand on my stomach to feel her, she stops.
Sleep: Do it every night.
Cravings: With my parents here, I’ve wanted to have a BBQ. The problem is that I’m still not able to really stomach red meat too well. I ate it anyway, but digesting it just wasn’t all that fun.
Symptoms: I’m still sick in the mornings right after I wake up once or twice a week, but fine the rest of the day. I feel a lot of pain when I go from sitting to standing and it usually takes a little walking around before I feel comfortable again.
